Well is it any stranger to have a sea kayaker at a major white water race?<\/p>\n<p>The race is in North Carolina about half way between Columbus and Hendersonville.  (About 30 miles by helicopter from the P&amp;H US headquarters.)  Viewers park on both sides of Big Hungry Road taking up both shoulders for over a mile and a half.  So, of course you have to walk to the trail head before embarking on the hike into the gorge.  Some people, the author included, were already huffing and puffing.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"The Hike In To The Race\" href=\"http:\/\/www.phpaddlers.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/The-Hike-In-To-The-Race-w10002.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"attachment wp-att-1280 \" src=\"http:\/\/www.phpaddlers.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/The-Hike-In-To-The-Race-w10002.jpg\" alt=\"The Hike In To The Race\" width=\"448\" height=\"338\" align=\"left\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nI drew this yellow-orange line on a Google Earth image guessing where the trail was.<\/p>\n<p>Notice the 28773 on photo?  Is that the zip code you would use if you lived in a tree there?<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Most of the way in was downhill and pretty easy, taking about 40 minutes to get to the &#8220;good&#8221; part &#8211; the mountain goat part.  I found it easiest to sit on a rock or root, dangle my feet down until they found something solid to stand on, and proceed rock by rock or root by limb.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Climbing Down\" href=\"http:\/\/www.phpaddlers.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/Climbing-Down.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"attachment wp-att-1283  alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/www.phpaddlers.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/Climbing-Down.jpg\" alt=\"Climbing Down\" width=\"446\" height=\"691\" align=\"left\" \/><\/a><br \/>\n<code><br \/>\n<\/code><br \/>\n<code><br \/>\n<\/code><br \/>\n<code><br \/>\n<\/code><br \/>\n<code><br \/>\n<\/code><br \/>\n<code><br \/>\n<\/code><br \/>\n<code><br \/>\n<\/code><br \/>\n<code><br \/>\n<\/code><br \/>\n<code><br \/>\n<\/code><br \/>\n<code><br \/>\n<\/code><br \/>\n<code><br \/>\n<\/code><\/p>\n<p>Did I say this section was steep?<br \/>\n<code><br \/>\n<\/code><br \/>\n<code><br \/>\n<\/code><br \/>\n<code><br \/>\n<\/code><br \/>\n<code><br \/>\n<\/code><br \/>\n<code><br \/>\n<\/code><br \/>\n<code><br \/>\n<\/code><br \/>\n<code><br \/>\n<\/code><br \/>\n<code><br \/>\n<\/code><\/p>\n<p>Then we finally got to the river.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"The Crowd\" href=\"http:\/\/www.phpaddlers.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/Waiting-for-the-next-racer-w450.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"attachment wp-att-1285 \" src=\"http:\/\/www.phpaddlers.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/Waiting-for-the-next-racer-w450.jpg\" alt=\"The Crowd\" width=\"450\" height=\"282\" align=\"left\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nThe crowd was spread along The Gorilla rapid.<br \/>\n<code><br \/>\n<\/code><br \/>\n<code><br \/>\n<\/code><br \/>\n<code><br \/>\n<\/code><br \/>\n<code><br \/>\n<\/code><\/p>\n<p><code><br \/>\n<\/code><br \/>\n<a title=\"What?  Me Worry?\" href=\"http:\/\/www.phpaddlers.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/What-Me-Worry.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"attachment wp-att-1286   alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/www.phpaddlers.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/What-Me-Worry.jpg\" alt=\"What?  Me Worry?\" width=\"671\" height=\"525\" align=\"right\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Some racers rejoiced at their elapsed time for the race.<br \/>\nSome were just glad they made it.<br \/>\nThis one may have been saying, &#8220;What?  Me Worry?&#8221;<br \/>\n<code><br \/>\n<\/code><br \/>\n<a title=\"Tailgating Result\" href=\"http:\/\/www.phpaddlers.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/Pile-Up-below-The-Gorilla.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"attachment wp-att-1287 \" src=\"http:\/\/www.phpaddlers.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/Pile-Up-below-The-Gorilla.jpg\" alt=\"Tailgating Result\" width=\"723\" height=\"595\" align=\"left\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>A new rule for next year may be &#8220;No Tailgating&#8221;.        But that is not what happened here.<br \/>\nAs the racers finished the race they parked their kayaks and joined the crowd to cheer on the rest of the racers.<br \/>\nI hope no one that parked that way is a valet when not paddling.<br \/>\n<code><br \/>\n<\/code><br \/>\n<a title=\"Kayak Panorama\" href=\"http:\/\/www.phpaddlers.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/Boat-Panorama.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"attachment wp-att-1288 \" src=\"http:\/\/www.phpaddlers.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/Boat-Panorama.jpg\" alt=\"Kayak Panorama\" width=\"717\" height=\"200\" align=\"left\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nBut, the kayaks were not all in just one pile. Some didn&#8217;t even make it to the parking lot.<br \/>\n<code><br \/>\n<\/code><\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Self Rescue\" href=\"http:\/\/www.phpaddlers.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/Self-Rescue.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"attachment wp-att-1289 \" src=\"http:\/\/www.phpaddlers.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/Self-Rescue.thumbnail.jpg\" alt=\"Self Rescue\" width=\"450\" height=\"262\" align=\"left\" \/><\/a><br \/>\n<code><br \/>\n<\/code><br \/>\n<code><br \/>\n<\/code><br \/>\nOne by one the racers got back to their boats and still had more Class IV and V rapids to traverse to get to their take-out. Except for one chap whose hull had a large rip in the bottom. Their field fix was just not good enough . So he carried it all the way out.<br \/>\n<code><br \/>\n<\/code>There were still challenges ahead for each including the risk of being pinned.  This chap struggled for a while before someone came to help him get unpinned.<br \/>\n<code><br \/>\n<\/code><br \/>\n<code><br \/>\n<\/code><br \/>\n<code><br \/>\n<\/code><br \/>\n<code><br \/>\n<\/code><br \/>\n<code><br \/>\n<\/code><br \/>\n<a title=\"A Nice Little Drop\" href=\"http:\/\/www.phpaddlers.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/Anice-little-drop-below-Gorilla.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"attachment wp-att-1294 \" src=\"http:\/\/www.phpaddlers.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/Anice-little-drop-below-Gorilla.jpg\" alt=\"A Nice Little Drop\" width=\"708\" height=\"729\" align=\"left\" \/><\/a><br \/>\n<code><br \/>\n<\/code><br \/>\n<code><br \/>\n<\/code><br \/>\n<code><br \/>\n<\/code><br \/>\n<code><br \/>\n<\/code><br \/>\n<code><br \/>\n<\/code><\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s just one fun spot on the way to their take-out.  A nice little drop below The Gorilla.<br \/>\n<code><br \/>\n<\/code><br \/>\n<code><br \/>\n<\/code><br \/>\n<code><br \/>\n<\/code><br \/>\n<code><br \/>\n<\/code><br \/>\n<code><br \/>\n<\/code><br \/>\n<code><br \/>\n<\/code><br \/>\n<code><br \/>\n<\/code><br \/>\n<code><br \/>\n<\/code><br \/>\n<code><br \/>\n<\/code><br \/>\n<code><br \/>\n<\/code><br \/>\n<code><br \/>\n<\/code><br \/>\n<code><br \/>\n<\/code><br \/>\n<code><br \/>\n<\/code><br \/>\n<code><br \/>\n<\/code><br \/>\nI started the climb back out of the gorge with thoughts, memories, and plans. I plan to go back next spring to smell the flowers along the climb back out. It seemed like my nose was only 9 to 12 inches from the earth for over 100 yards of the steep part of the climb. So in the spring I&#8217;d be able to smell the flowers without needing to bend over.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"The Hike Back Out\" href=\"http:\/\/www.phpaddlers.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/The-Climb-Back-Out.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"attachment wp-att-1295 \" src=\"http:\/\/www.phpaddlers.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/The-Climb-Back-Out.jpg\" alt=\"The Hike Back Out\" width=\"623\" height=\"719\" align=\"left\" \/><\/a><br \/>\n<code><br \/>\n<\/code><br \/>\n<code><br \/>\n<\/code><br \/>\n<code><br \/>\n<\/code><br \/>\n<code><br \/>\n<\/code><br \/>\n<code><br \/>\n<\/code><br \/>\n<code><br \/>\n<\/code><br \/>\nMaybe I&#8217;ll bring some Husky sled dogs to pull my fanny up this hill. Some racers are in really good shape.<br \/>\nRemember that fellow that drug his kayak out of the gorge.  He passed me while I was on this section.<br \/>\n<code><br \/>\n<\/code><br \/>\n<code><br \/>\n<\/code><br \/>\n<code><br \/>\n<\/code><br \/>\n<code><br \/>\n<\/code><br \/>\n<code><br \/>\n<\/code><br \/>\n<code><br \/>\n<\/code><br \/>\n<code><br \/>\n<\/code><br \/>\n<code><br \/>\n<\/code><br \/>\n<code><br \/>\n<\/code><br \/>\n<code><br \/>\n<\/code><br \/>\n<code><br \/>\n<\/code><br \/>\nThe hike back out took some nearly 2 hours.
