A relatively mild winter turned wicked a few weeks ago, and I find myself ice-bound and snowed under. Temperatures haven’t topped freezing in three weeks, and a winter storm just dumped 18 inches of snow on us.
One of my favorite places to paddle is out of Gloucester Harbor to Kettle Island. This past Sunday was clear and cold, a perfect day to paddle.
This crazy world we live in never seems to slow down. I know most people read the paper in the morning and I think it can set the tone for the entire day.

In June of last year I was teaching at the Inland Seas Symposium in Bayfield, Wisconsin and might I say it is a fine event; an event that I would have never have thought of finding my soul mate. But, as we all know, when you least expect it, expect it!
After a long day of instructing I decided to settle back with my guitar to play a few Julio Iglesias tunes in preparations for the evening’s events. As I began to play “To all the girls I’ve loved before”, I heard an angelic voice coming from the far end of the demo beach. Almost hypnotically, I began to walk that way in hopes to meet the siren that would have such a mellifluous voice. What I found was surprising; it was Danny Mongo from Werner Paddles walking towards me!
We met, a mere few feet away, and began to harmonize through the second chorus. It was grand!
But as all good things do, this came to a screeching halt. Some punk kids (as seen in the picture) walked up to us and began to ask Danny for spare change. Imagine the nerve! Two grown men are singing in harmony on a playground in the middle of nowhere, minding their own business, trying to let a bit of love grown in a harsh world, and these two rakes have to come and ruin a beautiful moment!
So, to those who feel like their agenda is more important than everyone elses, remember this; thoughtlessness hurts and in some cases brings love to an end!
On a side note, these near-do-wells also stole Danny car and ran his underwear up a nearby flag pole. Openly I laughed…on the inside, I was crying!
Are drysuits really worth the money? If you saw the amount of work that goes into research, development, construction and testing… on that alone, your answer would be yes!
After an incredible 2006 racking up mileage in the new Capella 161, thought I’d take a moment to show a few photos and get everyone excited about 2007. Busting Through Wave at Skooks photo copyright Gary Luhm
The Salmon Spawning Season has come to a close on the mighty Sacramento River but that doesn’t stop the fly fisherman from searching for that “Record Trout”.
