Garth getting close

With the recent scorching 110+ degree weather in Redding, me and a few buddies decided to go play on the Northern California coast to escape the heat.

In the summer at Trinidad, it is usually foggy, windy and cold. What we found was better than perfect weather (71 degrees) blue skies and lots of fun. Even the harbor seals were enjoying the weather so much, they just sat and watched us play in the rocks.

After 15 miles of paddling rock gardens, we ate lunch and surfed at a local beach for a couple of hours until we were waterlogged.

Later that afternoon, I even got to help rescue a small fishing boat that got washed up on the beach due to a dead engine. Two young kids with no PFD’s wearing jeans and t-shirts in a rented boat. I had them tie a rope onto the bow and I paddled the rope out to a bigger rescue boat to pull them out of the surf zone. Good fun! I wish everyday at the ocean was this good and exciting. The rescue crew said they couldn’t have done it without us and they have a new respect for kayakers after watching me go in and out through the surf with ease. It was only small 4′-5′ surf but their boat couldn’t get in the surf zone without swamping.

Well, it’s time to enjoy the summer and the great weather!

Happy paddling,
Captain Penguin
